A sound wave is a mechanical wave that requires a medium to travel. A mechanical wave is unable to transmit its energy through a vacuum. Slinky wave, water waves and Jump rope waves are some of the examples of mechanical waves.
All other waves i.e. electromagnetic wave, microwave and light wave don't need any medium to transport their energy and can easily travel through vacuum.
