The French colonization of the Americas began in the sixteenth century by Samuel de Champlain and continued until the eighteenth century. France built its first colonial empire in North America, called New France, which stretched from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the Rocky Mountains to the west and to the Gulf of Mexico to the south.
