It really does depend in which war. In ww2 The first good victory was going to France through Belgium. But before this Britain said that if you were to invade Belgium you will bring war. Germany or Nazi Germany didn't care so they invaded so because Britain got involved in ww2 it became much more of a struggle win ww2.
