Was the Japanese attack on Pearl harbor a success or failure from the Japanese point of view?

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was considered a succes on the Japanese part, because it destroyed most of the planes and sunk many, battleships and cruisers.  Also, it destroyed the Navy base there and put the military at a weak point.
