The message that Mr. Kong wanted to send when he wore the "stupendous" Mao button was to show he was more patriotic than his co-worker.

Why did Mr. Kong wear the stupendous Mao button?

Mr. Kong seemed to be in some sort of competition with his co-workers especially Mr. Chin who had a Mao button.

Mr. Kong therefore decided to outdo Mr. Chin by acquiring and wearing a stupendous Mao button to show he was better and more patriotic than Mr. Chin.
