Why do totalitarian regimes seek to destroy and kill intellectuals (smart people)?

So since totalitarianism is the concept where the government or political system does not like any ideas other than their own they want to get rid of intellectuals because they do not want them voicing their opinions to change the minds of the people away from the government. (I am so sorry if this is confusing and makes no sense, it’s the best way I could word it lol)
