Lying at the city center and called Gu Gong in chinese, it was the imperial palace for twenty-four emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

I agree with the above answer, but it wasn't only a place for the emperors. It was reserved for the royal family. The Forbidden City was built in Beijing from 1406-1420. It is the largest palace complex in the world covering 183 acres and it compromises 9,999 buildings.
