As an opinion I feel like america does not encourage indivdual identity because as Americans we criticize and make fun of people who seem different when they are just expressing their true selves. Americans whisper, mock, and gossip at people who don't belong in their group of "Normal" However in some cases there are people in the world who do encourage others to be themselves for example, Oprah.
