The cattlemen and commercial farmers attracted even more settlers to the west because they were producing food surpluses that generated more economic growth in general. This increased economic growth created new job positions to be filled by newcomers.

For example, the cattle industry needed people to tend and control the cattle in the open praires of the west, and this job was filled by what came to be known as cowboys.
