He wants his project to succeed and the only way to do that is to get his feeder to do better than the others. So to change or not change would be the conflict that comes next.
By the tone of the passage it sounds like Max doesn't want to present a failed experiment to the science fair. SO he mostly likely will change the results to fake the outcome and make it look like his project was a success.
