Answer:

Most of the states weren't happy when the slaves were freed so they made the Black codes. The Black Codes restricted the rights of freed slaves and helped maintain a source of cheap labor. For a short period after the Black Codes were ended life improved for African Americans, but then the Jim Crow laws were made which were even worse. The Jim Crow laws denied African Americans equal rights, political and social treatment.
