we have the two numbers, x and y

x - y = 3

y = 0.75x

x - 0.75x = 3

0.25x = 3

x = 12

We substitute x into an equation: y = 0.75x

0.75 x 12 = 9 so y = 9

They have a difference of three

x = 12 and y = 9
