Why was unity so important during the drafting of the Declaration of Independence?

In order to best create a good Democracy seen by out founding fathers, we must have created a strong unity. Without unity we could have not have a more structured government. Our government must have been unified, otherwise our states would not be states, we would not be a country. A strong unified government keeps the order and peace that we wanted.
