Why is burning coal a major source of pollution?

coal is a chemical fuel, which we use to make electricity , cook barbecue...etc
 The sulfur in coal combines with oxygen to form sulfur dioxide  which is a major pollution if we use big amount of quantities.
 

-Sulfur dioxide is the chemical compound, It is a toxic gas with a pungent, irritating smell.
